Here is another intriguing discussion, this time concerning the naming of laam al ta'reef.
 There are two schools of thought: Basri and Koofi. The Basriyyoon refer to this particle as "Al" while the koofiyyoon refer to it as "alif wal-laam". 
Shaykh Uthaymeen rahimahullah explained this debate very clearly in his Al-Aajroomiyyah classes. To sum it up,the koofiyyoon say "alif wal laam" instead of "al" based on the condition of the alif. 
Referring to our discussion on Saturday, why is the alif present in laam al ta'reef? Based on that, although laam al ta'reef is a 2-lettered particle, what might make it different from other 2-lettered particles like من?
