1 Which Category? on Mon Sep 25, 2017 11:29 am

Based on Sunday's discussion concerning the differences between the Qurraa', see if you can match the examples to the corresponding category.

Ex 1.

Hasanan. You established that this category can be applied to the above example. In which part of the ayah, though? Assuming this is the correct category, what was switched around?

Tayyib. Assuming this is the case, the question is: how is there ta'kheer in example 1?

وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتٍ۬ تَجۡرِى تَحۡتَهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ

I think it's addition and subtraction because one of the two examples the "مِن" was subtracted and in the other it was kept.

Correct, jazaakillaahu khairan. The category that this example belongs to is the addition/subtraction one due to the addition of من in some recitations and the deletion of it in others.

Example 2:
أم يقولون إن إبراهيم
أم تقولون إن إبراهيم

Tayyib. I'raab is a change that occurs at the end of a word and is in reference to the vowel or the ending letter(s). For example لا نكذبَ in hafs is لا نكذبُ in warsh. You have the right word and you explained the change correctly however it is not categorized under i'raab. Let's give it another go.

The better term would be change of tense, good job.

Next example:

The noon in the first word was changed to a baa in the second word. I think that would be a change in sarf.

Not quite. To help solve this one, you might consider one of the distinguishing characteristics of uthman's mus-haf, radiyallaahu anh. Why was it possible to change this letter from a baa to a noon (or vice versa)?

The dot is in different places, and the mushaf of Uthmaan (radhi Allahu 'anhu) had no dots at all.

Also, the mushaf of Uthmaan had no vowels, too.

there were no vowels and in the first one the baa has no dots.

Excellent! So in response to this example, would we call it morphology (a change of structure in the same word) or a word that has been replaced entirely with a different one?
