In class, we noted that there are surahs in the Qur'aan categorized as Mufassil. What are the Mufassal? What is its categories? The remaining suwar (pl. of surah) are categorized similarly. Try to research the answers and share your findings here.

Not all of the mufassal suwar begin with the huroof al muqatta'aat. If I am not mistaken, only the first of the mufassal suwar begins in that fashion. Do you remember which surah we said begins the mufassal?
Also, since it was mentioned, can someone explain what the huroof al muqatta'aat are?

Baarakallaahu feeki, Aisha. That was how they were referenced in the hadeeth "...from the first of what was revealed was a surah from the mufassal and in it mentioned paradise and Hell Fire..."
Here, though, we want to establish which suwar are considered to be mufassal.
There is a well known hadeeth in which rasoolullaah sallallaahu alaihi wasallam categorizes the suwar as mufassal...etc. It ends with "وقضلت بالمفصل""And I have been favored with the mufassal". Finding this hadeeth will lead you to the remaining categories, too, in-shaaAllaah.
Bismillaah!

Not suratul Baqarah, though it does start with the huroof al muqatta'aat. Try again!

Hasanan. A hint:

We mentioned in class that the reason the Mufassal are named so is because the word comes from "fasala" meaning to separate. Due to the shortness of these surahs, the basmalah frequently appears "separating the surahs".

So from this linguist perspective, which surah (starting with the huroof al muqatta'aat) might more appropriately be ascribed to them?

One of the traits of the mufassal is that they are all short. Surah Ibraaheem may be short comparatively, however it is not grouped with surahs that are the same. Rather, preceding it are the surahs Yusuf, Hud, and Yunus which are 100+ verses each! (Likewise with the surahs immediately following this chapter.)

The first of the mufassal surahs is no more than 3 pages in length, and the rest of them are similar to or less than it. Let's give it another go with this additional clue. Bismillaah!

That's correct! Some of the ulama mention surah qaf as the first surah of the mufassal and some mention surah hujuraat.
Tayyib. The mufassal can be divided into three categories: the long mufassal; medium mufassal; and short mufassal.
Starting from surah Qaf, let's break the suwar into their subcategories.

When I looked in the mushaf, this is what I found:

Surah Qaf to Surah Mumtahanah look like the long mufassal.

Saf to Takwir look like the medium mufassal.

Infitar to Nas are the short mufassal.

That's a good start, Salihah! The طوال (longer mufassal) actually enter into juz amma. There are two opinions concerning which surah ends the طوال, though. What do you think?
